I provide each of my three first grade classes with a STEM Special class each week. As a part of this class, we explore the world while incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. As a part of this, our students will get the opportunity to explore ecosystems and animal adaptations. This project will present these ecosystems in a close-to-home way. Each class will get their very own Hydroponic Water Garden! Many of our students don't know what it is like to have a pet or a garden. Many students don't know where their food comes from. With this project, students will learn where food comes from, how food grows, and will experience growing their own food. Students will have the opportunity to watch a fish in a stable, natural environment while exploring ecosystems and animal adaptation. Students will learn how hydroponic systems work -- how the plants rely on the fish and how the fish relies on the plants to provide their needs for survival. Students will also learn how to care for a pet.
