Too often students see the teacher in the classroom as an authority to dispense knowledge. However our students get a much deeper understanding of material when they are able to work together and see that there are many different ways to approach a learning challenge. Students love to come to the front of the classroom and show how they solved a math problem, display a passage from a book the illustrates a concept we've discussed, or share their own personal writing. However an obstacle occurs when the class isn't able to easily see their peers' work as it is being presented. Students can deepen their learning by having the opportunity to present their thoughts and work samples more easily to classmates. A document camera will allow students to project their work for classmates to easily view as it is presented. A microphone will help those quieter talkers (in addition to those fun skits students love to perform to show off their creativity). A printer (with extra ink of course) in the classroom will give students a chance to print, scan or copy their work immediately for another method of displaying or sharing. And finally there is nothing better than an office chairs with wheels to make a third grader feel extra special and important as their share their learning with classmates. Students truly learn best when they are active members of a learning community where they are able and encourage to share their thoughts with each other.
