My students need high interest books to engage them as they learn how to read. Clifford, Mr. Putter and Tabby, Fly Guy, and Frog and Toad are all characters that will help introduce my students to literary concepts and word patterns in such fun ways! I want all of my students to have access to fun characters that will make them them, and make them really look forward to reading every day. During stations, I want my students to really love going to the independent reading station. According to Houghton, Mifflin, and Harcourt, research has firmly established the correlation between time spent reading and reading achievement (Allington, 2014; Cunningham & Stanovich, 1998; Krashen, 2004 and 2011). However, reading enjoyment is based on the scholar's ability to read a book fluently and with a high degree of comprehension. In order for this to happen they need to have books that are on their level and that they look forward to reading! By the end of this school year our goal is to have all of our first grade scholars reading on the "I" level based on the Reading A-Z framework.
