These 11th grade Language Arts students are beginning their study of text forms and functions and literary devices by examining comics! Students are reading "Understanding Comics" by Scott McCloud and using their learning to create comics of their own that use literary devices. I aim to make our first novel, "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien, more accessible by first providing the context and graphical structure that is available in "The Best We Could Do." My students will benefit not only from the perspective of a Vietnamese refugee, but also through continued exposure to the engaging graphic novel format.
