My first grade class is located in Florida. My school is in a high poverty area where most of the students are on free or reduced lunch. The school is a small elementary school which houses Pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Many of my students come from single parent homes where they can barely afford the basic necessities in life that we all take for granted. I constantly hear from my students that they do not have books in their homes. I have seventeen students in my classroom and many of them are reading at a low level. They are sweet kids that really appreciate the things that they are given. I have spent much of my own money to create an environment for them that fosters creativity, learning and makes them feel secure and safe and they really treasure their classroom. Since our school is limited in resources their are many items that my classroom and students need which would help them to succeed.
