This year we are implementing a new math curriculum called Zearn, containing three components – whole class fluency instruction, small group teacher-directed instruction, and an individual digital lesson. The lessons are first introduced as whole group instruction where we work on strengthening fluency skills and cooperatively work on solving a word problem of the day. Next, students are split into a small group for the teacher-directed part of the program. Other students work independently on their digital lesson, then switch for small group instruction. Currently, I am using a dry erase board to provide different strategies for completion of word problems and computations. However, this means that I have to turn my back to my students several times during a lesson. Turning your back on students - even for a few seconds - can lead to a variety of unwanted behaviors (i. e. talking without permission, off task behavior). The most desirable situation is to be able to face your students at all times. This ensures several things - students' attention to and understanding of task. I would like to be able to teach with the use of a laptop, document camera, and projector so that I may more easily accomplish the task of checking for understanding, implementing technology into the lesson, and keeping students on task and engaged in each lesson. Students love to "come up to the board" to solve problems. Having this equipment would make that process easier to accomplish. Students would be able to share with other students THEIR PROCESS of solving computational problems, word problems, and any other task required in the lesson. This allows students to see a VARIETY of strategies to solve problems. The use of a document camera would allow students, and myself, to model using hands-on materials (i.e. markers and manipulatives).
