This project will fund a set of novels, "Chains" by Laurie Halse Anderson. This novel tells the story of a Black American slave fighting for freedom during the American Revolution. This novel is a prime example of how literacy can be both interdisciplinary and engaging. First, the novel has an engaging story that will inspire my students to take their reading to the next level. Second, this novel has many historical themes that take place during the American Revolution. Third, this novel integrates issues about racism and identity which will help my students connect historical themes to current issues. I truly believe that creating engaging lessons with this set of novels can spark a rigorous interdisciplinary connection that will allow both English Language Arts teachers and Social Studies teachers to collaborate and help students make more conceptual connections. I am excited for the ideas that will flourish within this classroom due to these novels.
