Theater is all about using the body as an instrument for expression and strengthening the voice. In order to achieve those goals, actors need to train their voices and bodies. This involves learning stretching, breathing, and vocalization techniques. Additionally, for middle school students, it's nearly impossible to shake off the school day and start fresh without a physical routine to ground the body in the new activity. Therefore, we intend to start each drama club meeting with a physical warm-up. However, we don't have a whole lot of space at our school (in fact, we share our building, including common spaces like the gym, cafeteria & auditorium, with two other schools!) so we will most likely have to use a classroom for our club. And if there's one thing middle school students won't do, it's lie down on a dirty linoleum classroom floor. Nor should they! We respect them enough, and they should respect themselves enough, to want them to have a clean, personal space on which to get grounded. As such, we are requesting yoga mats so that our actors can have that clean, special space to mark a separation between the school day and drama club practice. We will be able to store these mats in the classroom and bring them out only for the special ritual of warm-up.
