Students who have traumatic backgrounds, live in poverty, or have ADD/ADHD require sensory or calming areas at different times of the day. My goal is to teach students to be able to self regulate their needs. It is important to have supports in place for students to self regulate their behavior before it escalates and becomes a behavior problem or outburst. The supplies I would like to have for our classroom will provide a sensory or calming area for students who need them. This area needs a comfortable place to sit, proper lighting and items that a student can use to comfort themselves or fidget with. Bean Bag chairs will be a comfortable and quiet seating arrangement. Items typically used to help calm a student or use to fidget include, cubes, balls, liquid motion materials, stretch toys and stress balls. To assist in alleviating an outburst or distraction from learning, latex foot bands will be a great benefit on the bottom of student chairs. Also, to aid in students who constantly need to move, stability seats are on the list of items for request. These help students stay in their seat and gives them the ability to move at the same time. All of the requested items are proven to help students through research based studies.
