For our intermediate students, the ability to use a digital device such as a Chromebook with headphones and a microphone opens up a world of reading to even the most unmotivated reader. Most of our students lost their personal books in the hurricane so they can't bring books from home to school to read. The headphones allow our students the capability to read books and respond with their own voices while their teachers conduct work stations and small group reading. The most unmotivated reader becomes motivated when they know a digital device can be used to read and respond. During our free time to read, we can use the headphones and microphone to partner read a text. Many of our lower leveled readers enjoy sitting with a partner and reading together or listening to the book read by a great reader and then get to respond with the microphone.
