Our classroom is looking to fund the a design project where children can interact in play outside and experience natural elements and be creative engineers. In our classroom, we have added Reggio Emilia inspired materials that invite children to explore and discover using found and recycled materials that are in our environment and in our homes. This has been beneficial for our parents and children making learning connections, for parents to see what learning possibilities lie in nature and how materials they use everyday and can find in their homes are invaluable instructional tools. We would like to add these Reggio Emilia elements to a playground outside that will invite children to become engineers, problem solving and playfully interacting with each other and their environment. We are interested in installing a vertical sand wall above our sand box. This is a feature that you might see in a children's Science Museum where children can push sand and water through tubes and tunnels, activate gears, engaging in pretend and engineer play. A water tower will allow children to control the flow of water through a log flume and into the sand where children will discover many creations they can make with wet sand. The sand wall is an opportunity for children to use their core muscles to work horizontally and vertically building strong gross motor skills that translate into precise fine motor skills in time. This play outside is important for allowing exploratory fun where children can make connections and discover scientific engineering properties through play. It is an expensive installation that our young ones will benefit from for years to come so we are asking DonorsChoose.org donors to help pay a portion of this cost to have the designers make this for our children's playground.
