Students who come into my special education classroom often need breaks throughout the day. Sometimes students get upset, frustrated, overwhelmed or tired. The goal of breaks is to help prevent students from having an emotional or physical breakdown. We are teaching our students how to recognize when they need a break and to ask for a break when they need one. When they ask for a break, they are given time into my room to calm down. Children love playing with knetic sand and waterbeads. Having these tools available in my classroom would help the students want to come to my room to calm down. Waterbeads and kinetic sand are a great way for students to have a sensory break as they help students release tension they have built up so they can return to the general education classroom ready to learn again. Our main goal is keep our students in the general education classroom as much as possible. By helping us provide these items, students can take the necessary breaks they need to continue learning throughout the day.
