My students have experience reading about scientific concepts in a textbook, completing associated laboratory investigation, and discussing concepts with their classmates. What they don't have experience with is analyzing a piece of scientific nonfiction. "The Sixth Extinction" by Elizabeth Kolbert would be an excellent first venture into the genre. While Kolbert ties in scientific research from many different scientific disciplines, her writing style makes the concepts easy to understand. With these books my students will be able to understand the dramatic impact human activities have on a variety of species. Kolbert provides historical examples of extinction as well as examples of species that are currently disappearing before our eyes. This book serves as a cornerstone to many concepts in Environmental Science and will help my students to be better prepared for the AP Exam in May.
