Being a first year teacher, in a combination class of third and fourth graders, it is often challenging to find something that fits every students' needs. With the ability to provide my students with a STEM bin, their imagination and creativity is able to run wild, as they sit and watch all of their possibilities become endless. More specifically, to allow students to be in control of their own ideas and learning. Having STEM bins will allow me as a teacher to not hand my students MORE work to do, but rather something that is a little bit more meaningful to engage their creativity. STEM bins are designed for early finishers, where students can grab one of the twelve bins, that are included in my supply list below, and get to work independently without teacher assistance. Each of the twelve bins will be filled with one manipulative that I have chosen below. Once students choose their manipulative, they will then pick a task card. Each task card has a variety of basic engineering structures, like a building or a bridge, just to name a few. Students will then have to recreate what is on that task card, using just the one manipulative that is in their bin. For example, a student might choose the tube locks, foam base ten set, or the building sticks as their manipulative, and their task card might say, "Construct a tunnel using the items in your STEM bin." The student will then find a place in the room to work independently on building a tunnel with the manipulative they choose. Once they are finished, students will reflect on their work by writing a response and determine what they could do better next time in order to build a more stable tunnel using another item.
