In my classrooms, nearly 70% of my students have language delays. They each vary in their abilities, but most experience a delay in their receptive language (what they understand), and/or their expressive language (what they use). Many of my students are still learning to communicate, whether it be through words, gestures, signs, or alternative means of communication. Research has repeatedly shown that reading to children can improve both language and literacy skills. I see this research come to life every day in my classrooms. I have had kids who spoke their first words thanks to books such as: 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear' by Eric Carle and 'The Pout-Pout Fish' by Deborah Diesen. Books are a magical tool for speech therapy and I would love to be able to provide my students with a wider variety of materials. I have specifically chosen books that serve multiple purposes and target developmentally appropriate skills. Some books on my list target gross motor movements through yoga, some books target preschool concepts, such as: numbers, colors, shapes, etc, and some books target important social skills. Most importantly, all these books will promote and encourage language development for all my students, regardless of their current ability.
