One of the most important and exciting parts about learning a new language is getting to learn about the culture of the people who speak that language. Calligraphy is a critical part of traditional Chinese culture, and is something that many young children in China learn to do in school. My students may never have the opportunity to travel to China, but by using these calligraphy materials, they will be able to gain a connection to teenagers living on the other side of the world, and gain new understanding and appreciation of a culture often misunderstood in the West. Watching people write calligraphy on the internet is one thing, but writing the characters they've learned using this ancient method is an exciting opportunity they will never forget. Anyone who has had the privilege of learning about other cultures respectfully through hands-on experience knows the value of such an experience.
