My students need to read more and more often! With stronger skills and more experience, they can engage more deeply with important works of fiction and fiction. They need more opportunities to read about issues they can identify with and that are important for expanding their understanding of themselves and the world around them. Unfortunately, our public school does not have the budget to provide my students with a new novel, as we already have text books. Our current text books focus on shorter works of fiction and nonfiction. 'The 57 Bus,' is a true story. This book will be a challenging and exciting read for my students, and will be the jumping-off point for their own discussions and a writing project about their experiences with discrimination and resilience. Students will read the book and participate in literature circles, in which they can take control of their own comprehension and explorations of the themes.
