My students have the amazing opportunity to start the first team from our rural school to participate in the First Lego Robotics League. Robots are going to take over the world and we might as well join them!!! This opportunity will allow my students to dig deeply into every aspect of STEAM by using the Mindstorms EV3 robotics kit. The league provides a unique challenge every year and, using the Mindstorms EV3 robotics kit, my students will research the challenge and use their critical and creative thinking skills to build robots to meet the challenge. The Lego kit contains approximately 850 pieces which are used to build a large variety of robots that respond to intricate coding written by students. This is the one of the most important items needed to participate in the Lego League, but it will also allow us to engage in a variety of other STEAM educational activities outside of the league. Not only will this give my students the ability to combine creative thinking with 21st century technology, it will give them the opportunity to work with and learn from students and adults they otherwise would not have access to. The world is big and my students need to interact with it. This will prepare them for tackling the most important issues of their generation by giving them a solid foundation in problem-solving and teamwork building as well as preparing them for jobs that haven't yet been created!
