Each issue of StoryWorks provides poetry, plays, grammar practices, fiction, non-fiction, as well as examples of student written work such as persuasive writing and even book reviews of current literature. Students really need a variety of texts to grow as readers and learners. One area in which it is difficult to find texts for students is written plays, or dramas. According to the American Alliance for Theatre and Education, completing"Drama activities improve reading comprehension, and both verbal and non-verbal communication skills." In each issue of StoryWorks magazine a new play is published. This will greatly assist me in teaching the genre of plays. Scholastic is a reputable company that is well known in the children's publishing industry. While our students read tons of Scholastic books, how often do those books contain plays, social studies topics, or poetry? This set of magazines will give my students access to a variety of quality literature. Do you remember getting magazines in your classroom? Do you remember how exciting it was to flip through that new magazine just to see what was featured that month? I want my students to feel that excitement.
