Creating a classroom community is crucial and should be set up from the very beginning of the school year. One way to build your classroom community is to have morning meetings at a specific gathering place in the room every day. Currently, my meeting area is a small space in front of the board where we gather for morning meetings. The rug is small and plain and does not fit my class of 18. We do the best we can but I feel like morning meetings would have a very different feel if the students were able to sit on a rug that fit everyone. Right now everyone is squished together and it is not possible for us to even create a circle. I find it hard to fully engage the students since they are having a hard time getting comfortable. If this project were funded, I know this large rug would transform my morning meetings and help build up my classroom community.
