With a universal meeting place, I envision my students using our classroom rug as an area to gather in the mornings, listen to stories that grow their imagination, begin lessons, and a time to meaningfully communicate with one another. The rug will give each student their own space to sit and comfortable learn. It will give students the opportunity to learn whole group in a smaller contained area. The shapes and colors of the rug will allow me the opportunity to play games with the students or easily call on students in a different manner; "If you are sitting on a triangle please stand up. Anyone sitting on a blue shape please share their idea." We will use our rug to read together, to "think, pair, share" ideas, and as an alternative learning space. The shapes and colors in the rug will serve as a boundary for certain activities and help encourage personal space among the students. With individual seating placements, students will be able to quietly and independently know where to go and sit. My students will greatly benefit from a classroom rug and it will continue to be beneficial for my future first grade students!
