For my project I chose a couple of different types of flexible seating options for my students. The seats I chose are swivel seats and exercise balls. These items will provide my students, many of who have a difficult time sitting still in their seats, a place to sit where they are able to move around while working on their assignments. These seating options will be placed at a large table I have in my room, a space where students already come when they need to step back and truly focus, a space where students learn math in hands-on, realistic ways using technology and manipulatives. These seats will take engagement to a whole new level, not only providing a space for enhanced focus and engagement but they are also fun! Seating like this gives a classroom a whole new dynamic and is an incentive for children to be on their best behavior. I have seen this with the minimal flexible seating I purchased myself for our room. The students who I allow to sit there know that when they are there, they must remain focused as it is a privilege, not a right. The fact that they have that knowledge has created an environment where I seldom have behavior issues. Having the opportunity to provide my students with more flexible seating could truly take their math experience to a whole new level. They deserve spaces that inspire them and encourage them to think.
