Our school's DREAM Team is a student-led leadership and activist club that promotes immigrant rights, with a special emphasis on creating a safe space for undocumented and refugee students. As the School Social Worker, I guide and mentor DREAM Team students. During these times of strong anti-immigrant sentiment, immigrant students are in desperate need of safe spaces through which they can continue to thrive, learn, develop their leadership, and make a difference in their community. Our school's DREAM Team provides a safe and empowering after-school outlet for students who may be feeling silenced, afraid, and marginalized during these times. As a student-led space, DREAM Team students dictate what is discussed at meetings, and what type of projects and initiatives they want to organize during the school year. They are responsible for recruiting new student members, and every year they fundraise for our scholarship fund, which supports immigrant students attending college, who are facing economic hardship. As a low-income school, our resources are limited. Having snacks, such as nuts, fruit snacks, granola bars, donated for our student after school meetings will make a huge difference in the lives of immigrant youth, and will make it possible for us to sustain our meetings throughout the school year. Good snacks can serve as a wonderful motivator for teens! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
