Middle school is a pivotal time in establishing good note-taking and organizational skills—especially in a subject like math where things can get a little messy. The use of interactive notebooks and the structured methods of gluing in colorful note-taking guides and paper manipulatives as a class will not only ensure that my students stay organized, but also that they can access all the subjects we have covered over the course of the year in a quick, efficient manner. In addition to colorful add-ins that make notes navigable, the benefits of introducing students to the use of highlighters as a useful note-taking skill will expand far beyond the walls of my classroom. Using highlighters to denote which pieces of notes can be used for which specific, color-coded problems on their independent practices or exit tickets will help to develop connection and application skills that are necessary for students to foster before note-taking can be a fully effective practice.
