My students are predominantly students of color. Unfortunately, the books found on teacher's bookshelves do not represent or reflect these identities. My project aims to change that. Too often, students draw a parallel between reading and formal essay writing or quizzes. But in my room we reach different heights with literacy. Each and every day, my students look forward to their independent reading time. During these 15-20 minutes each period, they are given complete student choice over their reading materials. Each month, they conduct student-led book clubs to spark interest in new genres, as well as to hold them accountable for making progress in the books. Otherwise, these novels are kept completely as pleasure reading. Many have expressed to me already that this is the first time they felt excited to read and I hope to continue that excitement! Help me to spark a passion and interest of reading and language in my high schoolers by providing them with meaningful, purposefully chosen, diverse, DELICIOUS novels. These novels include best sellers and award winners such as "The Hate U Give," "A Long Way Down," and "Fun Home."
