My students have taken a keen interest in the way technology aids the work of engineers. In our engineering unit, we have discussed the engineering design process used in both the design phase and construction phase of a build (E.g. bridges, buildings, equipment, etc.). My students noticed that most projects conducted by engineers involve technology. Whether for a crane, a computer, design software, or even a simple screwdriver, engineers use technology to aid in their work. Although our engineering unit involves class projects that replicate the types of constructions engineers are responsible for, ever observant, my students couldn’t help but notice that our projects do not involve the use of technology. For this unit, my students wondered if it was possible to incorporate a real technology in our project. To give my students a more realistic introduction to the field of civil engineering, it is paramount that I use similar technology that professional civil engineers use in their design process and builds. If I want my students to continue to not only succeed in our curriculum, but to pursue a career in STEM, it is best that I socialize them in the tools, practices, and processes of real engineers. The products I chose will help me to achieve this goal. The 3D Pens I am requesting are a more hands-on alternative to 3D Printers. In a whole class workshop, students will take turns using the pens to construct their own models of bridges. They'll need wax paper and filament to make this happen. This will provide them with experience using a technological tool in their work whilst having fun while doing so. Students will also learn how technology influences the engineering design process, how technology is used for trouble-shooting problems in the build, as well as how the technology is used to solve real world problems.
