The recycling center here in Rhode Island is a fabulous way to collect used materials to add to my students' STEM ( Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) center. This center allows my first-grade students to learn about recycling as they explore building things collaboratively, using common materials. However, I have a lot of materials in a giant box and it takes too much time for little hands to find what they need for a project. Having a storage unit with clear bins will allow students to choose the materials they want to work with easily and quickly while allowing more time to create! Each week I change the project they will create. The first week was to build a bridge. The center shows pictures of different bridges and they need to use the recycled items to build their own bridge. Another STEM activity was to build a chair or a house. The possibilities are endless. My first-grade students are becoming engineers, designing solutions to real-world problems. "Look what WE made!" The excitement that shows on their faces when creating a useful object from discarded items is what learning is all about!
