While our students have the drive and desire to succeed, they do not have the materials to help them do so. Our students typically come to school without these basic supplies due to the financial strain on families that requires them to step in and help make ends meet. I have spent much of my personal funds to help create a Student Center with these supplies; however, as a public school teacher, there is only so much that I can do on my own! In creating a Student Center, filled with tools for highlighting, annotating, and keeping track of important information, students know exactly where to go to get the basic tools they need to "go beyond" in their learning! True to the name, the materials from this project are complete "up for grabs" for the students. They can use them as if there were their own. In fostering a collaborative and respectful space, students are also in charge of managing and taking care of the materials. Although these things may seem basic to some, having free access to paper, pencils, highlighters, and supplies to make their work a bit more colorful can make a world of a difference.
