My students learn music best by doing, creating, and performing. By using instruments and other creative vehicles in elementary music, we empower students to be musicians themselves. Why play the music of others when students can create, improvise, and compose their own musical ideas? This year we starting tapping into their creativity by writing a song together as a class, but my students are ready to take their learning a step further. With ukuleles, they will be able to accompany themselves, dive deeper into understanding of harmony and chords, have a hand-held visual for pitch and the science of sound, and a chance to collaborate in group projects. The ukulele, in particular, is engaging, easy to learn, and so fun for students.
