As part of our 12th grade English curriculum my students are reading Macbeth. Along with this reading we are also learning about the life and times of William Shakespeare. One of the difficulties of teaching Shakespeare is fitting it into a modern lens. My students are visual learners as well as the more traditional readers of literature. Graphic novels allow these students to see, as well as hear and read a play. These novels show and reinforce the connections with Shakespeare and the modern world. To understand Shakespeare as well as any other playwright a student needs to experience the feelings of the writer.
