I have my preferred parking spot and my favorite spot at home on the sofa. When I have these options, my day is better. I am happier and more productive. Why not give my students the same options for their best learning. I don't want to hear,"I hate math." Instead I want to hear, "Oh look at the seat and options I have today, I am ready to learn!" Last year, I bought a stool that rocked and tilted in all directions, and this one stool that I purchased, created classroom competition to see who would get it each day. At first my students were running to be the first one to class to grab the seat. After a while of kids literally running to get to math class(if you know 7th graders, you know I am not exaggerating), I created a random list of each period for one semester. I not only taught about sharing, but also about independent and dependent probability with the generated class list. The next semester I created a reward chart. The students would run into my class in the morning looking to see how the classroom was set up, and who had the stool seat. This year, I want to create more than just one special seat. I want to be able to offer options. I want to have different color stools, a standing desk and a bean bag chair.I cannot wait to start each day and show the kids they don't have to sit and be quiet to learn math. Find your seat and be productive and learn, that's the new motto.
