All of our students are curious and courageous, and want to read about other children like them who are also courageous. Currently, we do not have enough textbooks in our classroom for each child to be able to read independently. With these textbooks, students will be able to read in the classroom, read at home, and be able to "go deep" with the themes, plot analysis, and character analysis that is required of them, as they prepare to write in response to what they have read. Facing the Lion is a key text in our Courage Curriculum. It is a true story of a boy who group up in Africa with the Maasai people. He faced many challenges, and eventually came to the United States. He is currently a teacher in the U.S. His story is written as a memoir, in first person, and is highly engaging to middle school readers.
