Opening up a new classroom as a new teacher has left me with a long list of needed basic supplies like markers, construction paper, learning manipulatives as well as organizational supplies. These are the basics to making a bright, functional, organized classroom for my first graders this year. A set of 10 unifix cubes per student will help them have a hands-on way to understand partners of 10 during math. Magnatiles will provide hands-on engineering skills during STEM activities and will also be used during team building activities where students will be encouraged to work together, practicing essential communication skills that will help them work collaboratively throughout the year. Magnetic letters are used during writing and literacy work stations where students will be able to practice phonemic awareness, spelling-soud correspondences, irregularly spelled grade level words, sentence structures and more. It provides essential reading and writing practice in a setting that students find so much more engaging than simple pencil to paper word work. I would love for students to have art supplies such as colored markers and construction paper. These will be used in book connection projects, art activities, science and beyond. It's amazing what a little color can do for student engagement! Rings will be used to bind together sets of sight words, spelling words, word families, and other literacy activities. Finally, the set of Pout Pout Fish books will be sent home with one student at a time every weekend along with a Pout Pout Fish stuffed animal and notebook. Students will get to take Mr. Fish on adventures, read his books, and write about their adventures together. These adventures will be shared with the class each Monday and will do wonders to opening up the world wonders and fun that can be found in books!
