The magazines from Scholastic include a variety of genres of text with an approach that notes the diverse backgrounds of students. Students can encounter an exciting array of texts with which to read from, including legends from Mexican history, plays about Greek gods, engaging historical articles about African-American heroes and heroines, inspiring poems, fun debates that kids can relate to and so much more. Having access to magazines that reflect the interests and current events of today makes for a powerful teaching tool. Our world moves so quickly, because of the rich digital society we live in. I can use each piece of text as a launchpad for rich text experiences and project based learning. For example, last year I used an article about invasive species and launched an inquiry based research project around the topic. It was a relevant topic that bled across content areas, incorporating writing skills, science content, research strategy, and conservancy in our community. It is rare to find a resource that addresses so many needs in a classroom. I can differentiate articles by reading level because Scholastic offers online audio supports. I have a variety of texts that students will get to choose from, in every article, every month. The diversity of the texts reflect the unique backgrounds of each student. I can link different texts to the different content areas I teach. It's a super teacher resource!
