I teach in a one high school town. More than half of the students in our school are living in poverty. Several years ago, as an English teacher, I started examining data and saw that nearly 45% of incoming freshmen were reading below grade level. Shocked, I helped to start a reading program, got my masters in literacy and am on a district team to implement systematic changes. Typically, I teach classes where many of the students are reading well below grade level. Can you imagine going to a place 7 hours a day for the past 6 years where everything put in front of you is at a frustratingly hard level? Many of my students have this experience. However, they refuse to give up, they refuse to drop out. Their courage is colossal. I want to do everything in my power to increase their reading abilities, allowing students to be successful in whatever future education or career they choose.
