With my new larger classroom space, I hope to offer the kids an entire area geared toward reading. In this new space I will have the opportunity to give my special education kids an inviting and exciting place to read a book. I want to offer them flexible seating options to read. I want them to have the ability to choose from numerous seating options that suit them best. Some need seating that they can move on to help keep them focused and some just need a soft quiet spot to concentrate. But they all deserve the opportunity to have a place to STOP, DROP down with a good book, and READ to strengthen their literacy skills. Not only will this space allow areas for children to read independently, but it will allow for us as a small group to sit down and have guided reading groups where every child takes a turn reading out loud. In guided reading groups we encourage one another and help each other sound out words that might be tricky. From there we create questions about our stories to answer, draw pictures to describe our favorite part, talk about main characters and work through many other reading skills that the children are needing extra support to succeed. I want them to ask to do our phonics program, our phonemic awareness activities and writing activities all using the flexible seating options outlined. My kids come to me daily for 45-75 minutes each day. I see them in small groups of no more than 8 but will be sharing the space with another special education teacher serving the same size group. So we are hoping that you might be willing to support our special education children with some exciting seating to encourage them to read.
