Going through the National Board Certification (NBC) renewal process will help me closely examine and reflect on my teaching practice and philosophy using their five Core Propositions as a guide (1. Commitment to Students and Their Learning, 2. Content Area Knowledge, 3. Monitoring/Managing Student Learning, 4. Reflecting on Practice, 5. Teachers are Members of Learning Communities). I would like to increase awareness of my students' skills, abilities, knowledge, experiences, family context, and learning styles in order to more effectively engage them. I want to help students understand how reading, writing, and speaking skills will empower them to succeed personally and academically. NBC will help me consider these aspects while also challenging me to design instruction that maintains rigor and addresses content-specific standards. I am also looking forward to growing as a teacher by collaborating and reflecting with other colleagues going through the renewal process. Over eight years ago when I was first certified, I was part of a team of teachers that provided support and feedback. I grew so much as a teacher from working with others. I believe that in order to teach my students to be life-long learners, I need to lead by example, and renewing boards certification is a very important way to do it.
