When I first saw the school with exercise bikes in its library, I was skeptical. I thought it was another gimmick to shine light on the library, and I was not on board with it. But I thought about it, and I watched the kids in the library who are reading. They are quite often bouncing, or now spinning in our new wobble chairs. The wobble chairs have been a huge success as the kids can fuss around and yet continue to read, and that's what the bikes do also. I talked to several kids and teachers about the bikes also, and everyone was actually very excited about it. As a staff we all recognize the high levels of energy some of our students have, and it can be very hard for them to sit and do anything, especially quietly. Reading is a critical skill, and the more it is done, the easier it gets. I am wiling to investigate any tool that will help my students read better, and the first few schools who have utilized these fitdesks have seen very positive results. I am also not territorial, and if the bikes are not being used for book reading, students may use them for other homework, and I see this as being a great outlet for our kids especially. Even students who have anxiety may benefit from some book and bike time, as the release they get from pedaling will help them better handle their emotions. Emotions create more energy, and need a release, and riding an exercise bike is a much healthier alternative to many other more destructive behaviors. There is no drawback to these bikes since they help expend excess energy, help students stay calm, and keep our kids healthy, all while they read!
