Our students live in an urban area in New York. They come from varied backgrounds, speak many different languages and are different in many ways. For many of the students, they are the first or second generation born in the United States. With that said, the students and parents have high expectations of success within our educational system. The students are willing to come to school, they are ready to learn, but they are reluctant readers. For some, it is a language barrier, but for others, it is because they have not been exposed to all that reading has to offer. The school (as well as 80% of the staff) is extremely new, which means there are not a lot of resources with regard to textbooks, library books, or even classroom libraries. The school wants students to have a balance between technology and reading within the classroom, but without the tools, that is going to be difficult.
