My jr. high students have my class back to back. This is a long time to ask anyone, let alone 11-14 year olds, to stay in a desk and be productive. I would like to offer unconventional seating like beanbags and stools to my students that have a difficult time staying still for long periods of time. My goal is to support my more active students by having a unique seating area that will allow them to focus while being active. I can say that the benefits of optional seating also help with any classroom management issues that arise. Students respond positively to the freedom and responsibility they are given, and they work hard to keep those privileges. I would also like to have headphones available to students that would like to listen to books on tape in this new seating area. Many of our students are still living with relatives and do not have a space to call their own, and others lost many of their clothes and personal possessions that they were unable to replace simple items like headphones. Small items like these really help boost student's spirits.
