This book will help my students engage with literature by presenting them with relevant themes in a format that is accessible to readers of different skill levels. My students love graphic novels, and are hungry for media that represents them. Teaching literature that is fresh, relevant, and engaging is the best way to help students grow their reading skills. American Born Chinese is a novel that deals with many of the issues that adolescents face in today's society. My students come from a variety of backgrounds, and this novel offers something that everyone can relate to. Furthermore, the graphic novel format makes this book appropriate for learners of all ability levels. My students who struggle with reading can use the art to gain context clues to help their understanding. My advanced students can study the details of the art to understand how the author uses the art to add an extra layer of meaning to the story. We will use this novel in a unit that studies characters' perspectives. This novel is uniquely suited for this unit because it starts with three different story lines which all come together at the end of the novel. Teaching this unit with a novel that students enjoy will help students master a concept that can be difficult to approach with traditional texts.
