High interest books such as The Fault in Our Stars, Tyrell, and Tears of a Tiger encourage reading not only during class time, but outside of class. Students will be able to use these novels to increase their love of literature. Numerous studies indicate that students that read for 20 minutes a day have a higher percentage of scoring high on college entrance exams. For our students who are college bound or not, they all have to read in some capacity for their job, the military, technical or vocational school, etc. Through a survey at the beginning of the year, 65% of my current students haven't read a book in 3 or more years. This is not uncommon for high school freshman, but that will change this year. With your support, they will gain reading skills that will challenge them, cause them to think about world issues, and encourage class conversations. Our school is small, and therefore the library is lacking current titles that students would be interested in reading. My students want to read, and many of the books I have requested are titles that they specifically asked for! Through reading, we can increase stamina, standardized test scores, college entrance exam scores, global awareness, improve their empathy, and counter many of the stereotypes made of young people today.
