Educating students is more than helping them grow academically. In my classroom, I strive to support the whole child including their academic, social, and emotional growth. Vigorous standards and schedules can make it challenging to ensure that classrooms are supportive of learning, yet developmentally appropriate and engaging for the students. In my first-grade classroom, play is a necessity, rather than an "extra" or a privilege. The benefits of play are endless in supporting creativity, collaboration, kindness, and problem-solving skills. In many classrooms, students begin their day by completing "morning seat work", which is typically a worksheet. This year I am attempting to incorporate student choice and play into our schedule as much as possible. One way to do this is by creating morning choice tubs. The materials and supplies I am requesting will be used by students each morning as they enter the classroom. Students will use hands-on materials such as the Tinkertoys, Interlox, and Caterpillar Bits to create, invent, and explore, alongside their peers. Mathematic, literacy, and social skills will also be promoted through cooperative play using games and materials such as the Countdown and Pop games, Silly Sentence puzzles, and Word Cubes. As soon as they enter the classroom, students will become artists, writers, readers, and creators. My goal is that this engagement and creativity will carry on throughout the school day.
