In the words of Jake Weidmann, a master penman, "By doing the different tactile movements of forming the individual letters and linking those letters from one to the other and then putting those words into the context of a sentence, you are actually ingraining that information into your brain." I would like a class set of calligraphy pens and ink for my Art 2 students (approximately 62) for creating art in their sketchbooks on a daily basis. They will be sketching, taking notes on historical time periods and incorporating ink into mixed media within their sketchbooks as well as their formal projects. I have noticed when students are working with pen and ink they are more mindful of space and composition and less mindful of being perfect. Students seem to surrender to the pen and let the ink work its magic. It's really a beautiful thing!
