Having this novel will help foster a sense of community in our classroom and build empathy by exposing students to a diverse cast of characters. My students come from various backgrounds just like the characters in "The Stars Beneath Our Feet." It is so important for students to get the opportunity to read about characters that look like them to affirm their identities and to be exposed to characters that don't look like them to build empathy and understanding. Despite my students' differences, they have experienced many of the same challenges that the main character, Lolly, faces around grief, friendship, forgiveness, creativity, acceptance, and the power of choices. It is my hope that having a class set of "The Stars Beneath Our Feet" will allow students to learn about each other and the world. We will read "The Stars Beneath Our Feet" during the read aloud portion of our class, where students unwind and enjoy reading together! Year after year, students express their love of the read aloud because this is where community is built. Students follow up their reading with double entry journal work, where they ground their reflections in textual evidence. Additionally, students get a chance to share their reflections with one another, affirming and oftentimes challenging one another. During this time, students explore their differences and uncover their similarities. Students reflect, write, and talk about their beliefs and opinions about their reading and how it relates to their life experiences. Students always walk away with a wider perspective of the world.
