It is a priority in Room 214 to have planned transitions built into our instructional day that allow for movement and a change of space. I make an effort to provide my students with brain breaks and opportunities to work in different areas of our classroom when possible. I allow students who have a difficult time staying focused to move to the floor to work or a different table. I have found that providing them with this flexibility has allowed them to show more of what they learn due to being able to refocus and finish a task. I am requesting flexible seating materials for my classroom because sitting still is difficult for small bodies. Research has shown that the wobble stool and stability cushions not only provide students with an ability to move but they help strengthen core muscles in the body. The wobble stool allows students bodies to balance and wobble as needed while sitting down and attaining to a task. Stability cushions safely sit atop the classroom chairs and allow students to wiggle while they learn. Chair bands are perfect for those little feet that feel the need to move and make noise. It allows students to move and stretch their feet without getting up out of their chairs. The demand that we put on young children today is a lot. We expect them to come to school and sit for long periods of time. Even with built in transitions within the classroom their little bodies need more. With these flexible seating materials, even the wiggliest of my students will be able to move while seated and focusing on a task. I believe the use of these materials will not only strengthen their little minds but also strengthen their core muscles and love for learning!
