My students are a diverse, talkative, and inquisitive community, and they need books that match their personalities to help get them into reading. Help us build up our library and our love of reading! In our classroom, we focus heavily on book choice and independent reading to foster a life-long investment in literacy and learning. In order to reach that goal, we need a larger variety of book choices. For example, I've chosen Ghostopolis and Bad Island for students who love thrillers/horror novels, but who have lower reading levels and need help with visualizations. I've chosen the "I Survived" series for students with an interest in historical fiction who also need action-packed scenes to keep them invested. Through reading conferences, I work one-on-one with students on reading skills and strategies to improve their literacy. However, we also need to build reading independence, and the first step is for students to enjoy reading and motivate themselves to find books that excite them. I'm hoping revamping our library a little will build this motivation.
