This project proposal is an extension to the project I submitted in the fall of 2018. I ordered 35 copies of Angie Thomas' "The Hate U Give" in September. I realized how imperative it is that each of my students have their own copy of the book. Most wanted to continue reading outside of class (a total win!) and because I had 64 students and only 35 books, I had to stifle that desire. This project proposal, if approved, will use the remainder of the funds generated in the fall to fulfill the need for 32 more copies of Thomas' novel PLUS additional contemporary fiction for my classroom library. I just started a new semester with 64 eager students, so the addition will be immediately put to use. The questions and conflicts the novels highlight will challenge my seniors to think about their place in this complex world. The novels have powerful protagonists; my students will be drawn to their struggles and triumphs. We will spend several weeks on Thomas' novel and then we read consistently throughout the semester using "choice" novels. The titles I chose are meaningful and compelling; they will certainly provide a powerful boost to my growing collection of fiction.
