We learn best when we take in information that we comprehend, and the best source for comprehensible input is reading what interests us on a personal level. 70% of our language comes from what we read (Stephen Krashen), so I want to promote voluntary reading in our foreign language classroom. I would like to build a library with a variety of small novels at different levels for my Spanish-language students to choose from. There are a number of companies that create compelling and age-/level-appropriate material for high school students. The topics range from historical events and cultural topics from the Spanish-speaking world, mysteries, challenges with adolescent life, romance, and school. Each story has characters and a plot, and I choose them by how popular and highly-rated they are based on other teachers' feedback.
