The books were chosen for the literature circles to enable students, primarily reluctant readers, to find a character they could connect with. The books are realistic fiction with characters around the age of my students, and they promote teamwork and persistence. Middle school age is a time for testing boundaries, finding out who they are, and wanting to fit in. In each book, the characters struggle with a problem (death, bullying, unsafe home), and while the protagonist might struggle, he will learn the value of commitment and friendship/teamwork. Those are two important lessons for kids to learn and respond to.
